PROFESSIONAL PAINTING TIPS

Painting can transform a room from boring and ordinary to sassy and alive! However, done without the proper care and equipment, it can also bring a bit of “what in the world happened in here" into a room.

If you would prefer to paint your room solo, here are few simple tips from David's experience that will help ensure your project is a successful one:

• Same direction. Rollers offer a more uniform appearance over large surfaces, but many people still prefer to use a paintbrush on walls. While this look is more desirable to many, it’s incredibly time consuming, depending on the size of your surface area. If you choose to go this route, make sure that you’re painting in the same direction throughout. If you waver from this pattern, it will show in the finished work.
• Proper equipment. Before you open that first can of paint, make sure you have all of the necessary equipment and supplies. This list should include paint clothes, tarps, step ladders, eye protection (for ceiling work), a dampened rag for errant drips, tape for prepping trim, etc.
• Ventilation. When painting, especially in smaller rooms, you must ensure that there is proper ventilation. Pregnant women should NOT paint, especially later in the pregnancy. Paint fumes can be hazardous to your health, plan accordingly.
• Lighting. Proper lighting will help ensure that your project comes out looking the way you want it to. This is especially important if you are painting with lighter colors or into the evening in rooms without adequate existing lighting to fully illuminate all surfaces.
